Plant Care for Beginners

Choosing the right plant

  • Consider your attention span when deciding on which plant might fit you best.

  • Consider pet safe or crumb cruncher (toddler) options.

  • Make sure you have clear care instruction from the grower.

  • Don’t worry about being a professional. Be you. A little love & a lot of care will go a long way!

Soil

  • Know what you’re working with. Some plants require more grit and faster drainage than others. Some require extremely humid conditions (Tropicals).

  • Make sure to have drainage holes. No one likes sitting on a soggy bottom.

Light

  • Bright light is NOT direct sun light. Over-exposure to direct sunlight can lead to scorched leaves.

  • Low light does NOT mean NO light. Your plant will die without light.

Water

  • Check the soil before watering! I like to use chop sticks to test down to the bottom of the pot to see if it’s really time to water. Remember, plants can go longer between waterings in the cooler months.

  • Consider plant food to add nutrients regularly.

  • Overwatering can lead to root rot - pick a schedule, and stick to it!
